Pediatric Dentistry

Our dentists and entire staff understand the importance of good oral health for young children. They have specialized training in primary teeth. They are here to help protect and restore children’s teeth so that they can speak and eat easily and have a wonderful smile. They understand the growth and development of children’s teeth so they can start children off with good oral health.

We also understand how important taking care of children’s teeth is. We will work with parents to ensure their children are taking good care of their teeth at home. Preventative Dentistry

Good dental preventative care is really important to ensure a healthy mouth, including your gums and teeth.

It is important to brush your teeth at least twice daily to help remove plaque and food particles that get stuck to your teeth. It is recommended that you brush your teeth for two minutes (or longer), though most people rush through this time. You need to make sure that you reach every side of each tooth, including the inside and outside. To help keep your breath fresh, you should also brush your tongue. Then, you can begin flossing.

Oral Health Exams

Oral health is one of the most important, and often overlooked, aspects of your overall health. The mouth can show signs of infection or disease before the other parts of the body. Great advances have been made in oral health treatments and many people are able to keep their natural teeth for their entire lives. However, millions of people don’t visit a dentist regularly and miss the opportunity to identify and prevent oral health issues.

Restorative Dentistry

It is our goal here at Dental Specialists of Loudoun to give all of our patients smiles that they are proud to have. To help our patients, we are proud to offer many different types of dental restorations depending on their specific needs. We are here to help patients who suffer from broken and missing teeth.

Our most common procedure is a filling. We can fill in any decay, plus we also fill in any teeth that are broken so that they continue to look natural. With missing teeth, we have more options. Bridges can be used to bridge the gap between your teeth. These bridges get cemented in, usually to your other teeth.

Sedation Dentistry

Dental Specialists of Loudoun is proud to offer different types of anesthesia to our patients to make their visits more comfortable. The most common type of anesthesia used is a local anesthesia. This prevents pain in a specific part of a patient’s mouth. This works by blocking the nerves to that area. We often use topical anesthesia before using local anesthesia. This helps to numb the area before we inject the local anesthesia. This is most often used for cavities.

There are some patients who require more anesthesia so we also offer sedatives. These are most effective if they are given before the procedure but they can be given during it. There are different types of sedatives. Some are inhaled as a gas though there are some in pill form. Some sedatives need to be given intravenously.

Silver Diamine Fluoride Potomac Falls, VA

Silver Diamine Fluoride

Here at Dental Specialists of Loudoun, we are proud to offer Silver Diamine Fluoride, or SDF, to our patients. SDF, as its name suggests, is made of silver, which helps kill bacteria. Like other fluorides, SDF helps to prevent cavities from forming or spreading to other teeth while helping with remineralization. By using SDF as opposed to other varnishes, our patients can avoid more frequent treatments as SDF is proven to be more successful at reducing the growth of cavities.

If you have cavities already, SDF can still help. SDF has shown to be effective in stopping cavity development even after it has formed. Bacteria that cause cavities tend to break down the tooth surface and can make teeth more sensitive to treatment. By choosing SDF for your cavity prevention and treatment, you can avoid more painful procedures such as drilling the cavity.

Cavities and Fillings

Cavities are the breakdown of teeth due to bacteria, also known as tooth decay. Bacteria can affect both the tooth enamel (outer coating) and dentin (inner coating). It's common for people to have cavities without knowing they do because they don't typically cause a lot of discomfort until they get worse. The more time that passes, the worse the cavity will become. If you wake up with a toothache or feel a sharp pain in your mouth while eating or drinking, it's quite possible that you have developed a cavity and should schedule an exam with your dentist.

Dental fillings are used to fill cavities and repair cracked or broken teeth. Fillings can be done with gold, porcelain, or silver amalgam, but is most commonly done with materials called composite resin fillings that are designed to match the color of your teeth.

Sealants

When we apply a dental sealant, we paint a plastic coating on top of your teeth. This makes your teeth smooth, getting rid of the rough edges, depressions, and grooves that are commonly found on teeth. It is essentially a protective coating against tooth decay and cavities.

The most common place to paint sealants is on back teeth since they are often irregular. They can also be very hard to reach, even if you brush your teeth regularly. We use it more on children though we do perform sealants on adults too!

Dental Implants

When you have missing teeth, an alternative solution to dentures is dental implants. While dentures are removable, dental implants provide permanent new teeth to restore your mouth’s function and appearance. Dental implants tend to offer a successful and lasting solution to the loss of some or all of your teeth.

We are able to provide different dental implant solutions depending on your specific needs. We will conduct a thorough assessment and discuss your options with you during your scheduled appointment.

Root Canals

A root canal is a procedure used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or becomes infected. Although normal tooth decay can become increasingly worse and eventually lead to a root canal, often times blunt trauma can cause the tooth to die as well.

Your dentist will remove the dead nerve from the tooth and then seal it off to prevent another infection or abscess from forming around the tooth. If the nerve is not removed the infection will continue to climb deeper into your gums, often causing swelling, pain, and discomfort.
